We are officially half way done with 2014, and its been a pretty good year for films. With plenty of movies still coming down the pipe were looking forward too like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hunger Games, The Hobbit, etc. However, lets take a moment and not let the big blockbusters blind us from some potentially great movies. So here is my list of 4 movies that I’m looking forward to, that are probably not on your radar.
To start off the list we have The Judge. The films puts juggernaunts Robert Downey Jr. on stage with Robert Duvall, and for good measure throws in Billy Bob Thorton as well. These 3 guys together, it can only get interesting. Downey Jr. plays a successful hot shot lawyer, and for unfortunate circumstances has to return home to rural Indiana. He has an estranged relationship with his father Robert Duvall, who is a very pretegious judge. However, his father is accused of murder and has to stand trail. He will defend his father on trail for murder. The premise isn’t spectacular, but its not meant to be. This will be a very witty and heavy character drama. It’s probably oscar bait as well. Then again, 3 legends get inside the ring, you need to watch that fight.
Hit the jump to see the next 3!
There isn’t much special about Fury when you first see it. It’s another World War 2 movie. Considering the significant impact that war was on history, its a shame were actually getting tired of visiting it on the big screen. It does have some things going for it, its addressing an aspect of the war most are unfamiliar with. A tank unit lead by Brad Pitt. The best WW2 films just use the time period as a backdrop to focus on one piece of the pie. If a director gets too caught up, he overwhelms the audience. So this story about a tank unit fighting behind enemy lines might have the right ingredients for a good stew. The cast is also stellar, Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Jason Isaacs, and Scott Eastwood. Yeah I know… Shia LaBeouf!? Listen.. he went alittle crazy and made some bad career movies, but the guys got acting chops. Give him a chance on this one.
This is where I leave you
I can’t hit you guys with nothing but serious drama movies. So lets take a peek at comedy with a very stellar cast. The plot we’ve seen before, estranged siblings who for the sake of a parent decide to spend some extended period of time together. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m all about the cast with this list. This cast is also too good to pass up: Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Bryne, and Timothy Olyphant. Bateman plays a character who is in pursuit of this “perfect life”. His wife cheats on him and he finds himself in a depression. While he enjoys being as far away from his family as possible, its just what he really needs. The best thing about this movie, at face value. It is not about him building his life together and finding new love. It’s really about this family coming back together. Family is a different animal for everybody, but its valued. I’d be happy to see a movie really focused on it , and makes me laugh at the same time.
This is likely the movie on the list you’ve actually heard about. To be honest, even with Denzel Washington at the helm. I was ready to sweep this movie under the rug. Another movie about a guy who is seemingly invincible taking down copious amount of bad guys. We’ve seen Liam Neeson do it, Nicholas Cage do it, Stallone, even Denzel do it in the Book of Eli (Which is good btw). The trailer doesn’t make it stand out much either, but I tell you what did… Director Antonie Fuqua. The last time these two worked together? Training Day… Denzel won his oscar off that partnership. The film is also appearing in a big way at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is one of the most renown film festivals in the world, and a very popular vehicle to attract Oscar buzz. With this evidence at hand, The Equalizer will probably be much more than a simple Beat Em up.
So that is what I’m looking forward too. What movies are you looking forward too? Lemme know!
